ABOUT US
THE OWNER

Dacora was founded by Nathan Porter in 2021. A native of Baltimore, Nathan has always loved to travel and experience other cultures. In his early adulthood, Nathan stayed at dozens of hostels and boutique hotels in Accra, London, Jerusalem, Namibia, Capetown and various other parts of the world . While he enjoyed the typical stay at a hotel, it was the unique environment of hostels and boutique hotels that allowed Nathan to truly feel a part of the countries he was visiting and connect with the culture of the location more than other lodging options. Over the years, Nathan began opening up his home on Airbnb to travelers throughout the world and grew skilled in accommodating different types of guests.
THE ORIGIN

The name Dacora stems from the ebonic pronunciation of The Cora; an ode to Cora Williams. Cora’s story spans back to the heart of Georgia over a century ago. The daughter of slaves, Cora Williams was born in Spalding County, Georgia in 1893 and began working as a sharecropper in her early teens. Cora married Paul Price in 1912 and after Paul returned from World War I in 1918 the couple followed the wind of the Great Migration to the greatest city in America, Baltimore. Despite immeasurable challenges, Cora’s story, like most of Black Baltimore, is a story of triumph. Cora and so many women and men like her during that time contributed immensely to the spirit and culture of this city. Amid overwhelming racism and discrimination, she not only raised 7 children but also ran a community store out of her home. Cora’s courageous pilgrimage to Charm City has reverberated for generations. It’s what guided her daughter Sarah to persevere in the city during the Great Depression and raise a strong family during the Civil Rights Era. It’s what inspired Cora’s granddaughter, Hope, to thrive in the city during the beginning of integration and the rise of the drug epidemic within Baltimore. And it’s the same spirit of courage and relentlessness that inspires her great-grandson, Nathan, as he resides in the city today.
